Meetjeslandse creeks cycling route
Route description
From the Huysmanhoeve, the bridge over the expressway brings you onto the northern stretch of the Meetjesland cycling network A little further along the route, you'll cycle past pretty villages and creek areas.
Opgelet!
- From October 2025, we started the reworking of all East Flanders cycling networks. Meanwhile, this also has an impact on the terrain: our maintenance teams will carry out the necessary adjustments between October 2025 and the end of March 2026. Keep in mind that junction sequences will change and signage will disappear or be added. Therefore, the bicycle network will be temporarily unusable during the on-site modifications. Not until the end of March 2026 will the renovated bicycle network be fully operational.
Starting point Huysmanhoeve
From the Provincial Regional Centre Huysmanhoeve, the bridge over the expressway brings you onto the northern stretch of the Meetjesland cycling network You'll continue past checkpoint 93 on your way past pretty villages and spots of the Meetjesland creek area. Quite a ride, but well worth it!
Node 90-42 SENTSE CREEKS
The Meetjesland creek area is at the top of many a nature lover's list of most beautiful natural spots in the country. Sint-Laureins and Assenede in particular can claim the title of the best creek towns of the region. At 6 km long, the Boerekreek is the largest creek in East Flanders. Not far away is the Oostpolderkreek, where you can enjoy breathtaking views from the long fishing jetty.
Node 86 Creek spots
The spot where the Blokkreek and Hollandsgat intersect (at checkpoint 86) and the Oudemanskreek (between checkpoints 43 and 46) are veritable Instagram spots on this route. Tag your best photo with #routen on Instagram!
Node 75 Leopold canal
The creek area is also wonderful near node 75. Here, you overlook the Leopold Canal, the Bentillekreek, the Oostpolderkreek and the Boerenkreek. In other words, all the region's trumps together!
Node 75-43 Sint-Jan-in-Eremo
The picturesque little white church of Sint-Jan-in-Eremo is dedicated to John the Baptist, whose life is depicted on the exterior doorway. People used to pray here against fits and epilepsy, diseases that 'St John' could cure.
Taste the creeks at eel restaurant Polderzicht, which features 10 eel dishes on the menu.
Node 60-46 Watervliet
Watervliet was voted one of the 15 most beautiful villages in Flanders, and that's all thanks to het Stee: the central village square with the majestic Our Lady of the Assumption church. Inside hangs the painting 'Nood Gods' by the Master of Frankfurt, one of the masterpieces of the Flemish Primitives.
Stop off at Brasserie Niveau for a pancake, ice cream sundae or savoury snack in a cosy village setting.
